What we do
Following decades of lies and betrayal by both the Conservatives and Labour, a clear choice has finally emerged in politics. What started as a political revolt has now become a serious movement to truly challenge the hegemony of these established parties. Reform UK seeks to tackle the issues that bear the most importance to young people today, and most likely for a long time to come. Most of us are concerned about the housing crisis, the collapse of our public services, and stagnant wages. For young people, however, this could end up being our lives. Reform UK has a different vision and is the only party willing to follow through with it. Rather than follow the Tory philosophy of surrender and inaction, Reform UK presents a bold agenda focused on unwavering principle.
As a society, we are wholeheartedly committed to this agenda . Although we are enthusiastic about the vision that Reform UK presents us, we are not a mouthpiece. We believe that a diversity of opinion is necessary to push politics forward, and encourage all members to have an open mind and think originally. Hearing young voices is essential to ensure the party’s future and we provide a platform for these voices to be heard. Through the events we hold, we aim to introduce alternative perspectives to political dialogue in Durham, give students a space to debate and express themselves without fear of censorship, give like-minded students the opportunity to socialise, and support the local party in its mission to take back the country. We strongly value community, and believe that it is important for us to involve ourselves in the local community as well as the university.
Durham University Reform UK Society is the first of its kind and, as pioneers, we have an exciting road ahead of us. We will be hosting a variety of in-person events which include discussions and debates, bar crawls and other socials, and addresses from speakers. We will also be offering opportunities to get involved in local campaigning and community engagement. Members also have the opportunity to contribute to our blog which can be found on this site. As a society, we stand on a firm set of values that guide our politics, but we encourage those who disagree to attend our events. In part, we are here to challenge the echo chamber and welcome debate from all sides of the political spectrum. In short, feel free to come along!
